More children staying at RMYA shelter during pandemic

A local shelter is seeing a lot more children and teens in need of help during this time.

Capacity at the Roy Maas Youth Alternatives (RMYA) shelter has gone up by about 25% in the last few weeks.

The shelter normally houses around 15 children at a time. It is now closer to 20.

The 24-hour drop in shelter, Centro Seguro, is also seeing an increase in traffic. Bill Wilkinson, President and CEO, said help will remain available for those who need it.

“We are not turning kids away. We are figuring out what we can do and how we can help them and how we can get them off the street. We are just going to be there for them and we will figure it out,” explained Wilkinson

To reach Centro Seguro, please call the 24/7 hotline: 210- 340-8090.

RMYA is also accepting donations at this time.
